چکیده

The assumption that the universe is homogeneous and isotropic on large scales is one of the fundamental postulates of cosmology. We have tested the large scale homogeneity of the galaxy distribution in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release One (SDSS-DR1) using volume limited subsamples extracted from the two equatorial strips which are nearly two dimensional (2D). The galaxy distribution was projected on the equatorial plane and we carried out a 2D multi-fractal analysis by counting the number of galaxies inside circles of different radii r in the range 5 hMpc to 150 hMpc centred on galaxies. Different moments of the count-in-cells were analysed to identify a range of length-scales (60 − 70 hMpc to 150hMpc ) where the moments show a power law scaling behaviour and to determine the scaling exponent which gives the spectrum of generalised dimension Dq. If the galaxy distribution is homogeneous, Dq does not vary with q and is equal to the Euclidean dimension which in our case is 2. We find that Dq varies in the range 1.7 to 2.2. We also constructed mock data from random, homogeneous point distributions and from ΛCDM N-body simulations with bias b = 1, 1.6 and 2, and analysed these in exactly the same way. The values of Dq in the random distribution and the unbiased simulations show much smaller variations and these are not consistent with the actual data. The biased simulations, however, show larger variations in Dq and these are consistent with both the random and the actual data. Interpreting the actual data as a realisation of a biased ΛCDM universe, we conclude that the galaxy distribution is homogeneous on scales larger than 60− 70 hMpc.

Standard cosmology is based on the assumption that the universe is spatially homogeneous. However the consensus on a homogeneous matter structure, even on very large scales, has never been complete. The advantage of correlation dimension calculations is that they enable one to obtain the transition scale to a homogeneous distribution, whereas other methods, such as those using the two-point cor...

Testing Homogeneity with Galaxy Star Formation Histories

Observationally confirming spatial homogeneity on sufficiently large cosmological scales is of importance to test one of the underpinning assumptions of cosmology, and is also imperative for correctly interpreting dark energy. A challenging aspect of this is that homogeneity must be probed inside our past lightcone, while observations take place on the lightcone. The star formation history (SFH...

The homogeneity of matter distribution at large scales is a central assumption in the standard cosmological model. The case is testable though, thus no longer needs to be a principle, and indeed there have been claims that the distribution of galaxies is homogeneous at radius scales larger than 70 hMpc. Here we perform a test for homogeneity using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Luminous Red Galax...

Parallel Visualization of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR6

The new generation astronomy digital archives cover large area of the sky at fine resolution in many wavelengths from ultraviolet through optical and infrared. For instance, one of these projects the Sloan Digital Sky Survey is creating a detailed catalog covering more than a quarter of the sky with images measured with five different filters. The size of the data set can be measured in terabyt...

Luminosity dependence of the spatial and velocity distributions of galaxies: Semi-analytic models versus the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

By comparing semi-analytic galaxy catalogues with data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we show that current galaxy formation models reproduce qualitatively the dependence of galaxy clustering and pairwise peculiar velocities on luminosity, but some subtle discrepancies with the data still remain. The comparisons are carried out by constructing a large set of mock galaxy redshift surve...
